What Does a GST Executive Actually Do?
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
1. GST Return Filing
- File GSTR-1 (outward supplies) by the 11th of every month
- File GSTR-3B (summary return + tax payment) by the 20th of every month
- File GSTR-9 (annual return) by December 31 each year
2. Input Tax Credit (ITC) Management
- Reconcile purchase invoices against GSTR-2B (auto-populated from supplier filings)
- Identify ineligible ITC (blocked credits under Section 17(5))
- Ensure ITC is claimed correctly and on time
3. E-Invoicing
- Generate IRN (Invoice Reference Number) for all B2B invoices above โน5 crore turnover threshold
- Handle IRP portal registration and integration with billing software
- Manage IRN cancellations (within 24 hours only)
4. E-Way Bills
- Generate e-way bills for goods movement above โน50,000
- Manage extensions for delayed shipments
- Handle rejection and re-generation when required
5. Reconciliation and Audit Support
- Reconcile GSTR-1 vs GSTR-3B (outward supply vs summary)
- Support GST audits by providing documentation and explanations
- Track and respond to GST Department notices
6. Compliance Monitoring
- Track GST due dates across multiple GSTINs (for group companies)
- Monitor supplier compliance (non-filing affects your ITC)
- Maintain GST-related registers and records
